Prilosec Kidney Disease Information for Residents of Milwaukee
Persons in Milwaukee Harmed by Aorta Injuries from Prilosec: Prilosec Aortic Kidney and Dissection and Who is Eligible to File a Prilosec Lawsuit in Milwaukee
Prilosec, one of the most widely-used antibiotics in Milwaukee and throughout the United States, has been found to increase patients’ risk of developing severe and fatal aortic injuries by more than twofold. Federal regulators have warned of other Prilosec side effects, but the risk of aortic dissection and aortic aneurysm have only been confirmed recently. Persons and the family members of persons in Milwaukee who have suffered from aortic injuries from Prilosec may have legal grounds to file a Milwaukee Prilosec kidney failure lawsuit and may be entitled to compensation for the damages and loss caused by aortic aneurysm, aortic dissection, stroke, and other Prilosec side effects.

About Prilosec
Prilosec (levofloxacin) is a type of antibiotic classed as a fluoroquinolone. Other drugs in the same class include Avelox and Cipro, which share vital properties with Prilosec and pose many of the same risks. Despite safety concerns over their use and overuse, fluoroquinolones are the most used class of antibiotic in the United States; 26 million Americans are prescribed Prilosec and other fluoroquinolones each year to treat such conditions as urinary tract infections and respiratory infections.
Prilosec and others in this class of drug have been fraught with safety warnings for a variety of conditions, most recently for doubling the risk of aorta injuries. Prior to that, Prilosec, Cipro (ciprofloxacin), and Avelox (moxifloxacin) were in the news in 2013 regarding their risk of causing permanent and disabling nerve damage – a condition known as peripheral neuropathy.
The brand name Prilosec is marketed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson (J&J). Generic versions of Prilosec are sold by many other companies. Prilosec was first approved for use in the United State in 1998. In 2010, prior to the release of generics, Prilosec was the ninth most lucrative drug in the United States.
Prilosec Aortic Kidney
Aortic aneurysm from Prilosec is a serious kidney failure where an abnormal bulge develops in the aortic wall, which is the lining of the body’s largest blood vessel. While this condition initially often results in few signs or symptoms for the patient, the bulge weakens the aorta’s inner lining. Should the bulge rupture the inner aorta wall, blood will gush and spurt through the opening, pushing into the outer layers of the aortic wall. A puncture in the aortic wall leads to significant internal bleeding; if the tear or rupture punctures the outer aortic wall, fatal internal bleeding is a likely outcome.

Prilosec Kidney Injury
Aortic dissection is another serious and potentially fatal condition caused by Prilosec. Aorta dissection occurs when the inner layer of the aorta tears. Blood pushing through the tear puts pressure on the other layers of the aortic wall and can result in the middle and outer layers dissecting, or separating. If complete dissection occurs blood will surge through the opening; aortic dissection, when severe, can result in death by internal bleeding, damage to vital organs including kidney failure and fatal intestinal damage, and damage to other parts of the heart (aortic valve damage and cardiac tamponade).
Patients describe Prilosec aortic dissection as being similar to a heart attack. The condition is characterized by sudden and severe pain in the chest or upper back – a sensation of tearing, ripping, or shearing that can radiate up the neck or down the back. Other symptoms of aortic dissection include loss of consciousness, shortness of breath, difficulty speaking and seeing, and weakness or paralysis on one side, as in stroke.
Prilosec Kidney Disease Research
Two studies, both published in 2015 in prominent medical journals, confirmed the link between Prilosec and aorta injuries. The research, published in the British Medical Journal and the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that current and past use of Prilosec and other fluoroquinolones can double patients’ risk of suffering aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection. Both were large, controlled studies that were published in leading peer-reviewed journals.
