FDA Prilosec Warning
Full Regulatory and FDA Prilosec Warning Information

Numerous FDA Prilosec warnings have been issued in the past decade, making clear that Prilosec is not the safe, innocuous medicine we once thought it was. PPIs such as Prilosec are available both as prescription and over-the-counter drugs, and many Americans are taking them to treat heartburn or other minor ailments, completely unaware of the serious risks posed by Prilosec.
FDA Prilosec warnings have been issued for the risk of bone fracture (2010), for depleting the body’s supply of magnesium (2011), and for exposing patients taking Prilosec to an increased risk of developing a Clostridum difficile infection, which is a life-threatening gastro-intestinal infection (2012).
An FDA Prilosec warning for kidney problems has not yet been released, as research indicating a link between chronic kidney disease and Prilosec and other PPIs is very new. The Prilosec kidney damage threat is under investigation by FDA officials at this time. Gastroenterologists anticipate an FDA Prilosec warning on kidney disease to be announced in the near future.

Prilosec Acute Kidney Disease and Acute Interstitial Nephritis
Taking Prilosec increases the risk of acute interstitial nephritis and acute kidney disease by 2.5-3 fold, according to research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in 2015. (Antoniou, et al) Acute kidney disease and interstitial nephritis are short-term problems that, when recurrent, can result in permanent and life-threatening damage to the kidneys.
Interstitial nephritis is an inflammation of the kidney’s tubules and surrounding structures. Taking Prilosec and some other PPIs have been found to be the leading cause of acute interstitial nephritis. (Simpson, et al. 2006)
Prilosec Chronic Kidney Disease
A prominent study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 2016 revealed the risk of acute kidney disease from Prilosec and some other PPIs to be 50% higher than for patients not using this drug. (Lazarus, et al)
Chronic kidney disease is a widespread problem in the United States, affecting more than 20 million Americans, according to the American Society of Nephrology. Prilosec has only recently been linked to this serious health problem. Chronic kidney diseases increases the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack, increases the risk of premature death, and can result in kidney failure, which requires dialysis or kidney transplant.
Symptoms of Chronic Renal Disease from Prilosec
Chronic renal disease, or chronic kidney disease, is 50% more likely in patients taking Prilosec than those not taking a PPI. Chronic kidney disease refers to the gradual loss of kidney function, resulting in the kidneys no longer being able to properly filter and cleanse the blood.
Patients who have suffered from Prilosec kidney failure report the following symptoms:
“If you don’t need these medications, you shouldn’t take them.”
Dr. Kenneth DeVault, President of the American College of Gastroenterology
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue and weakness
- Sleep problems
- Changes in urine output
- Decreased mental sharpness
- Muscle twitches and cramps
- Hiccups
- Swelling of feet and ankles
- Persistent itching
- Chest pain, if fluid builds up around the lining of the heart
- Shortness of breath, if fluid builds up in the lungs
- High blood pressure (hypertension) that's difficult to control
Prilosec kidney disease can be difficult to detect. Symptoms often seem non-specific – possibly traceable to any number of problems. Secondly, the body tends to be able to compensate for decreased kidney function up to a point when permanent damage has already taken place.
