Prilosec Kidney Problems

About Prilosec

Prilosec (omeprazole) is one among a widely used drug type known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and is used to treat common maladies like acid reflux and heartburn. Prilosec suppresses the body’s production of stomach acids, relieving symptoms yet putting patients at risk for other, more serious health problems.

Prilosec became available when it was approved by the FDA in 1989 for severe gastric problems. Taken as a tablet, capsule, or via IV injection, PPIs are used by millions worldwide, many who suffer from mild conditions such as heartburn. When AstraZeneca’s patent expired in 2001, generic versions of omeprazole were developed.

Prilosec Kidney Injury

While the drugs have important uses, many health safety experts say Prilosec is vastly overused; many Americans who take the drug may not need it, and many patients are prescribed the drug for far too long. Long term use of Prilosec has been associated with side effects that include bone fracture, bacterial infection, pneumonia, heart attack, and stroke. Critics hope increasing awareness of risks such as Prilosec stomach cancer may serve to curb the overuse of PPIs.

Prilosec Stomach Cancer

New research shows Prilosec may have a worse impact on gut health than antibiotics, but the public is far less aware of the dangers. Prilosec works by stimulating gastrin production yet suppressingstomach acid levels. Stomach acid is a key component in digestion, aiding the body in absorbing nutrients while protecting from bacteria. Taking PPIs long term, for a year or more, throws off the stomach’s balance and makes the development of cancer much more likely. A study conducted of all PPI users in Sweden between 2005 and 2012 shows that both men and women face a threefold risk of developing stomach cancer from Prilosec. Researchers believe the risk is connected to Heliobacter pylori, a common bacteria that resides in the stomach of more than half of the general public. On its own, this bacteria can result in an infection that causes reflux-like symptoms. Long-term PPI use in patients where H. pylori is present are at risk for atrophic gastritis (a precursor to cancer) and stomach cancer from Prilosec.

Prilosec Overuse Leads to Stomach Cancer

Overuse of Prilosec is a widespread problem. As estimated 90% of PPI prescriptions are made for indications not approved by the FDA which could be solved through a change in diet, weight loss, and milder over-the-counter drugs like Rolaids. Researchers estimated in 2016 that 25% of patients using PPIs over the long term could cease using the drug without suffering side effects. By continuing their prescription, patients are being exposed to an increase risk of developing Prilosec stomach cancer. Critics blame PPI overuse on aggressive drug company marketing to doctors.
